Feature Percentile Z Score (Standard Score) Percent of Median
Definition The value below which a specific percentage of observations fall. The number of standard deviations a value is from the mean. The ratio of an individual's measurement to the population median.
Center Value 50th Percentile (Median) Z-score of 0 (Mean) 100% of Median
Unit of Measurement Percentage (0 to 100) Standard Deviations Percentage
Utility in Extremes Poor sensitivity (clusters at the 1st and 99th ends). Excellent sensitivity (quantifies exact distance from the mean). Good sensitivity (shows exact mathematical ratio to the center).
Statistical Basis Divides ranked data into 100 equal groups. Standardizes variables using the mean (ฮผ) and standard deviation (ฯƒ). Compares a raw value against the 50th percentile value.
